Form 2290 amendments correct changes after original filing: weight increase, mileage exceeded (suspended vehicles), or other taxable changes. This guide covers when amendments are required, filing process, costs, and deadlines.
When Amendments Are Required
1. Weight Increase
Vehicle's taxable gross weight increases into higher category during tax period.
Example: Filed at 60,000 lbs ($210 tax), increased to 75,000 lbs ($550 tax)
Tax owed: $550 - $210 = $340 additional
2. Mileage Exceeded (Suspended Vehicles)
Vehicle filed as suspended exceeds 5,000-mile limit (or 7,500 for agricultural).
Tax owed: Full year's HVUT + interest from August 31
3. Other Taxable Changes
- Vehicle sold/destroyed (claim credit)
- Suspended vehicle returned to service
- Logging vehicle status change

Amendment Filing Deadlines
Weight Increase:
File amendment by last day of month following the month weight increased.
Example: Weight increased October 15 → Deadline November 30
Mileage Exceeded:
File by last day of month following when you exceeded 5,000 miles.
Example: Exceeded December 10 → Deadline January 31
How to File Amendment
Step 1: Determine Additional Tax Owed
- Calculate new total tax based on changed circumstances
- Subtract what you already paid
- Add interest from original deadline to payment date
Step 2: Pay Additional Tax
- Use EFTPS or credit card
- Include tax difference + interest
- Save confirmation number
Step 3: File Amendment Electronically
- Select "Form 2290 Amendment"
- Indicate reason (weight increase or mileage exceeded)
- Enter VIN, new weight/status, payment info
- Submit to IRS
Step 4: Receive Updated Schedule 1
- Download stamped Schedule 1 showing new tax paid
- Replaces original Schedule 1
- Valid for remainder of tax period

Credit for Destroyed or Sold Vehicles
If vehicle destroyed, stolen, or sold before end of tax period, you may claim credit for next year:
- File amended return indicating vehicle disposition
- Credit applies to next tax year's HVUT
- No cash refund for current year
